Sustainable travel tips help you make smarter decisions during your trip. They can help you in booking your accommodation and planning your activities. You become conscious about how and where you spend your money, too.

Sustainable travel focuses on reducing the negative effects of tourism while maximizing its positive impacts. Below are some sustainable travel tips to help you save on your journey.

1. Avoid “overtourism”

Many people prefer going to famous destinations. However, this isn’t a good idea. These places have too many visitors that’ll make it difficult for you to enjoy your stay. Skip these tourist traps and get off the beaten path for a more authentic travel experience.

Do a little research on less popular or new attractions. There are many cheap beach resorts, historic cities, and other tourist hotspots with fewer people. They may not be as popular, but they have a lot to offer. To start, you don’t have to wait in line anymore or pay a lot. You get to be the “first” among your friends to visit the place, too.

2. Take it slow

Many people want to visit as many places as possible when they travel. It’s true you can see many attractions. However, you also feel stressed out from rushing from one spot to another.

Instead, slow down and spend more time in a particular destination. Immerse yourself in its unique culture and connect with the locals. Rent one of those tiny house long term rentals or long term stay apartments.

Also, slow travel reduces carbon emissions caused by transporting between destinations. You’ll have a more memorable, eco-friendly, and meaningful trip.

3. Pack reusable items

One of the most practical sustainable travel tips is to pack reusable items. Avoid using single-use plastics. Instead, take a drink bottle, bamboo cutlery, and other environmentally friendly items. Use zero waste toiletries, too.

Another smart tip is to repurpose items you use at home. It also helps if you travel light by packing appropriate clothes.

4. Conserve water and energy

Whether you’re staying in a fancy hotel or long term stay apartments, you must conserve water and energy. Tourists who fail to do so greatly affect local water supplies and energy resources.

Turn off the TV, air conditioning, and the lights when you leave. Use the shower instead of the bath and keep it short, too. If possible, stay in properties that use renewable energy. For instance, many cheap beach resorts are using solar electricity. Meanwhile, high-end properties are now using water and energy efficient technologies.

5. Go local

You can have a positive impact by spending your money locally. For example, you can stay in a locally owned tiny house long term rentals and dine at independent restaurants.

Buying locally made products can help the communities, too. Support farmers’ markets and exhibits of local artists. Further, join in the local activities by watching concerts and shows.

Save more on your next trip by sticking to these sustainable travel tips. Spend your money wisely, and help the locals and the environment, too.
